Massage is one of the most effective means of influencing the functions of the human body. Massage is beneficial for a variety of health-related purposes including pain relief, injury rehabilitation, lowering stress level, increase relaxation and address symptoms of anxiety and depression, overall aiding the body’s general wellness.
Through a variety of techniques and modalities, massage utilizes systematic manipulation of the tissues of the body to promote stress relief and relaxation, mobilize various structures, relieve pain and swelling, prevent deformity and promote functional independence in a person who has a specific health problem. The purpose of massage is to aid in the healing process and improve and maintain health. Each massage is unique and should be administered in a systematic fashion while adjusting the amount and mode of application to each client.
There are seven basic procedures of massage.
Each one has specified techniques that can be considered either stimulative or sedative. The procedures include touch, stroking, friction, kneading, vibration, percussion and joint movement. These procedures and their respective techniques are used in combination to administer several different modalities of massage.
